Leila Lawrence

Leila Lawrence (1920-2008) was a Peace Country artist and longtime resident of High Prairie whose work reflects a strong interest in local history, family memory, and rural life. Remembered for her involvement in the community, as well as her love of art and gardening, she created paintings that documented places and stories important to northern Alberta. Married to Ike Lawrence, she was connected to the Lawrence family of the Peace River and Fort Vermilion region. Through works such as Winter at the Lawrence Ranch, Leila Lawrence helped preserve the memory of the people, landscapes, and agricultural traditions that shaped the development of the Peace Country.

The Town of High Prairie acknowledges Treaty 8 territory, the ancestral and traditional territory of the Cree, Dene and Métis. We acknowledge the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples whose footsteps have marked these lands for generations, including the many places you are joining us from. We are grateful for the many Traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. Our recognition of this land is an act of reconciliation and an expression of our gratitude to those whose territory we reside on, or are visiting.
